| How can I get involved with the fashion industry as a teenager?
I am very interested in pursuing to be a fashion designer when I am older. I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on what I could do now (as a 15 year old) to jump start that dream and get ahead of anyone else. Thanks | Status: Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2009

If you live close enough to a metropolitan area where many boutiques are plentiful, or where major fashion magazines are present, you can usually apply for an internship position. Interning in the fashion industry is a great way to get your foot in the door while also making your name known with people who can possibly make things happen for you later in life. While at 15, you might be a little too young for an internship at a magazine, you can most certainly offer apprenticeship/internship at an independent designer's boutique. He/She will show you the ropes of the industry and give you a good feel on whether or not the industry is for you. I worked at a bridal boutique for a few summers and learned a great deal about clothing aesthetics. Hope this helped!

Hello! Since you're only 15 I have to admit that it will be difficult for you to get a big head start right now out in the community but there are small things you can do until you get older and have more opportunities open to you. One thing is to just start looking more into fashion now. Do research, learn the ins and outs, READ about everything that's involved. That way you'll be prepared to jump right in as soon as possible. Start showing others that you're interested. Make yourself fashionable and learn how to make your own clothes. I've seen girls wear their own designs to school and one girl even made her own prom dress. It was amazing because it was unique and she did it all on her own. Another idea is to try to set up your own fashion show. This year as my senior project I worked with a friend and we did a fashion show in our mall. In our mall we have a store called Cinderella's Closet. People donate gently used formal dresses and they are all sold for only $10.00 each. The store opens for 2 days each year- once before formal and once before prom. You could do something like this on a smaller scale and make the fashion part the big deal but also benefit your community. It's a fun project, especially if you're into fashion! You can get a salon involved to do your models' (girls from school who volunteer) hair, give out flyers to raise awareness, and even send a press release to your local newspaper. If the newspaper gets a hold of the story and you make it a big enough event you may event get interviewed which would be a great time for you to express your interest in fashion and the whole community will hear about it. Of course when you're 16 I would look into getting a job in some kind of fashion-related job, even if it's just as a clothing store. Internships are great, too but if you don't live in a big city they are difficult to come by. I hope I helped atleast a little bit! Message me if you wanna talk some more!
